U.S. News Recognizes USF on Its 2023 Best Education Schools Listing

Joliet, Ill. – U.S. News & World Report released its 2023 Best Education Schools listing today, and the University of St. Francis (USF) is proud to announce its inclusion in the annual publication. According to USF College of Education dean John Gambro, Ed.D., USF effectively prepares teachers to excel as they begin their respective careers. “We focus on excellence and prepare teachers to excel on their first day in the classroom. Our graduates have confidence that allows them to be successful in helping students reach their fullest potential. USF has one of the best teacher education programs in Illinois with 100% pass rates on all required tests. This reputation for excellence sets our graduates apart and results in USF teacher candidates being highly sought-after for employment after graduation,” Gambro said. Although the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic continue to have a lingering effect on the teaching profession, Gambro believes the preparation that USF teaching students receive positions them to succeed even as the needs of students, parents and schools change. “Preparing the next generation of teachers is more important now than ever before. Due to the pandemic, the challenges that educators face require that they are highly skilled in differentiating to meet the academic and social emotional needs of students.  This level of skill requires a student-centered approach that affirms and values the diversity and individual differences that each student brings to a learning experience. To that end, our programs develop teachers who educate the whole person and design developmentally appropriate learning environments that allow all students to maximize their potential,” Gambro said. “We place a high priority on real-world experience and getting students involved in actual teaching as soon as possible.  After their first semester freshman year, students are able to complete a field experience in a classroom every semester.  That’s a very unique feature not available in other schools,” Gambro added. About U.S News & World Report’s Ranking Methodology According to U.S. News & World Report, the organization “evaluated education schools on research activity, academic excellence of entering students, faculty resources, and opinions on program quality from education school deans and school hiring professionals. In fall 2021 and early 2022, U.S. News collected statistical and reputation data directly from education schools for the overall Best Education Schools ranking. The data was also used for nine distinct rankings in education specialty areas and for populating each education school’s individual directory page. Altogether, 457 schools granting doctoral education degrees were surveyed. Among them, 274 responded, providing the data needed to be eligible for inclusion in the overall graduate education rankings.” Additional details are available here. : : The University of St. Francis, in Joliet, Ill., serves close to 4,000 students nationwide and offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, nursing and social work. Support USF Students on April 6 through Day of Giving

Day of Giving - April 6, 2022
Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) will celebrate Day of Giving on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, and invites alumni, parents, students, friends and the community to support USF students as they continue on their journey of servant leadership. “Day of Giving is a special 24-hour time period during which USF invites our entire university community to make a gift and, more importantly, make a difference,” said Kim Kalafut, USF Director of the Annual Fund. In 2021, 100% of USF’s incoming freshmen received financial assistance. This financial assistance is made possible through many efforts throughout the year, including the Caritas Scholarship Ball, the fall and spring annual fund appeals, and special events such as Day of Giving. “Every single gift provides the much needed support for our students at USF.  Approximately 51% percent of this year’s freshman class is comprised of first generation college students – that is, they are the first in their family to attend college. In fact, over the course of the past decade, an average of 59% of each of our incoming freshman classes were first-generation college students. Without scholarship opportunities, their continued education would not be possible. Today’s students are faced with academic unpreparedness as an outcome of COVID. Today’s students need more support than they have ever needed before. Gifts made as part of Day of Giving support our students in their effort to think bigger and pursue a brighter purpose at the University of St. Francis,” added Lisa Sampalis, USF Vice President for Advancement. To make your gift, please visit stfrancis.edu/dayofgiving or call Kim Kalafut, USF Director of the Annual Fund, at 815-740-3610. : : The University of St. Francis, in Joliet, Ill., serves close to 4,000 students nationwide and offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, nursing and social work. USF Earns 2022-2023 Military Friendly® School Designation

Military Friendly School
Joliet, Ill. – The University of St. Francis (USF) announced today that it has earned the 2022-2023 Military Friendly® School designation. Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey with 665 earning special awards for going above the standard. USF has earned the honor annually since 2011. The 2022-2023 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May and October issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com. Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by VIQTORY with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans. “USF maintains the highest standards in our programs and assists veterans in both the admission process and applying for their applicable benefits,” said Bruce Foote, Veterans Certifying Official at USF. “Military Friendly® is committed to transparency and providing consistent data-driven standards in our designation process. Our standards provide a benchmark that promotes positive outcomes and support services that better the educational landscape and provide opportunity for the Military Community. This creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to evolve and invest in their programs consistently. Schools who achieve awards designation show true commitment in their efforts, going over and above that standard,” said Kayla Lopez, National Director of Military Partnerships, Military Friendly®. For more information about USF’s student veteran programs, visit stfrancis.edu and search the keyword “veterans”. About Military Friendly® Schools The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources from more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions. The survey questions, methodology, criteria and weighting were developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. The survey is administered for free and is open to all postsecondary schools that wish to participate. Criteria for consideration can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com. About VIQTORY Founded in 2001, VIQTORY is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) that connects the military community to civilian employment, educational and entrepreneurial opportunities through its G.I. USF’s McDermott to Release Book of Poetry on May 1

Joliet, Ill. – Beth McDermott, an assistant professor of English and foreign languages at the University of St. Francis (USF), has always wanted to write a book. In fact, it has been a dream she has held since third grade. On May 1, McDermott’s first full-length collection of poetry, Figure 1, will be released.

In Figure 1, McDermott is deeply invested in the ekphrastic tradition of writing poetry after works of visual art by artists that range from Degas to Audubon to Stieglitz, while also narrativizing a still life and arguing on behalf of a story or perspective beyond the frame.

“I’ve been studying ekphrastic poetry since graduate school, and I’ve had the chance to teach a “Poets Look at Paintings” poetry writing workshop at USF twice now; having the chance to read literature and criticism related to the types of poetry I like to write proved very resourceful in writing the book,” McDermott said.

While Figure 1 will be McDermott’s first full-length release, it is not her first publication. In 2015 (the year she came to USF), McDermott published How to Leave a Farmhouse, a chapbook inspired by the Rural Historic Structural Survey of New Lenox Township. However, even with that publication under her belt, McDermott continued to eye a larger poetry-based project.

“As exciting as it was to have a chapbook, or a booklet of poetry under 40 pages in length, I really wanted to publish a full-length collection of poetry. I’ve been working towards this goal in my years on the tenure track at USF, writing poems that I published in literary magazines and hoped to arrange as a collection,” McDermott said.

While publishing a book helps McDermott achieve a dream she’s had since childhood, she credits the journey to this point for reinforcing something in which she firmly believes: writing is hard work, and it doesn’t happen in complete isolation.

“I had the chance to work with USF student Eve Odum on a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) grant Eve received to produce a podcast about book publishing. Eve’s podcast is called Book Publishing from Beginning to End, and each episode features an interview with a local author of young adult novels and children’s books. Interviewing award-winning writers such as Ruth Behar reinforced to me that writing a book is a lot of drafting and revising, a lot of sharing with friends for feedback. Sometimes you have to hire an editor, and rejection is common. But persistence is really the key, and it helps to have people around who you can talk to who are knowledgeable about the process,” McDermott explained.

Figure 1 will be available on Amazon.com and through Pine Row Press on May 1.

USF Named a Sub-recipient of Bureau of Justice Assistance Grant Award

Joliet, Ill. – In late 2021, the Joliet Police Department (JPD) was awarded a grant worth over $476,000 through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance grant program. JPD will use the grant to fund crisis intervention training for its officers to improve service call responses involving individuals with mental health issues. The University of St. Francis (USF) was named a sub-recipient as part of the grant award and has supported the program’s overall design. The comprehensive effort connects JPD and USF with other area agencies, including the Behavioral Health Unit of the Will County Department of Public Health and Cornerstone Services. This collaborative approach, according to USF assistant professor and social work department chairperson Laura Honegger, Ph.D., MSSW, LCSW, will better connect individuals with mental illness to needed treatment and services. “This collaborative partnership will provide both dispatchers and police officers with specialized training to facilitate the diversion of individuals with mental illness to needed treatment and ancillary services, such as housing, food, benefits, clothing, and healthcare. It’s my hope that this grant will ultimately reduce the ‘revolving door’ of incarceration for persons with mental illness in the Joliet community,” said Honegger. USF’s role as a sub-recipient of the grant is twofold. First, the university will provide the project with case management from USF MSW-level interns. Second, Honegger and USF assistant professor of criminal and social justice Stacy Dewald, Ph.D., will comprise the research team on the project and carry out process and outcome evaluations. “I look forward to collaborating with the Joliet Police Department to help improve service delivery for those in our community who are struggling with mental health issues. Through this grant, we hope to provide officers with the training, skills, and support needed to effectively respond to calls and have officers refer those struggling with mental health issues to the proper resources. This program will hopefully help build positive community relations, improve public safety, and promote effective law enforcement strategies,” Dewald said. The project will span three years, including one year of planning and two years of implementation.
