Kyung-Mee Choi began teaching at the Department of Social Work, University of St. Francis in 2010. Dr. Choi received her Ph.D. in Social Work in 2010 from Loyola University Chicago and her Master of Social Work from Loyola University Chicago in 2005; a Master of Arts in Social Welfare from Daegu University in Korea in 2000; and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Silla University in Korea in 1993. She worked for a community center and a family therapy institute in Korea as well as worked for Korean American Community Services in Chicago, where she provided individual, family, and group counseling for Korean immigrant family.
She has taught the courses of Social Work in a Pluralistic Society and Women in Contemporary Society at the undergraduate level, and the courses of Human Behavior and Social Environment I & II, Social Work Practice with Older Adults, Substance Abuse Treatment, and Field Practicum & Seminar at the graduate level. Her major areas of interest include immigrant family’s mental health issues, older adults, aging, death and dying across cultures, and culturally competent social work intervention. Her proposal titled “Korean Immigrant Fathers’ Perceptions and Attitudes toward Their Parenting Involvement” was funded by a Scholarship Mini-Grant of the University of St. Francis in 2013. Another proposal titled “Social Work Students’ and Social Workers’ Perceptions and Attitudes toward Aging, Death, and Dying across Cultures” was funded by a Scholarship Mini-Grant of the University of St. Francis in 2018. Dr. Choi strives to develop enthusiasm for learning in her students, teach the subjects well, and create a respectful community of faculty and students based on her cross-cultural learning experiences in Korea and the United States.
