USF Awarded ComEd Green Region Grant to Support Prairie Restoration

ComEd Green Region Grant award banner
Joliet, Ill. – Once covering over 21 million acres, less than 0.1% of Illinois’ native tallgrass prairie remains. A $10,000 matching grant awarded to the University of St. Francis (USF) and its ‘Reestablishing Illinois Prairie Land: Ongoing Tallgrass Prairie Restoration at Charlotte Codo Prairie in Frankfort, IL’ project through the ComEd Green Region Grant program looks to reverse that trend. The Charlotte Codo Prairie, gifted by the Codo family to USF, is a local prairie restoration site approximately 15 miles east of Joliet. The restoration was initiated by the Codo family in 2014 and is maintained by USF today. Currently, this 47-acre property houses 24 acres of restored tallgrass prairie. Tallgrass prairie fields are used by USF faculty and students for research and educational purposes, including studying biological diversity, learning species identification, and contributing to future restoration practices. Codo Prairie is a site of active restoration. “We plan to expand the acreage of the restored prairie in a multi-year, multi-stage project,” said Chloe Lash, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at USF and project director for the university’s ComEd Green Region grant. “Seventeen acres of alfalfa field on the property will be the next stage of prairie restoration at Codo. While restoring native tallgrass prairie, we also wish to expand public engagement at Codo,” Lash said. The project, supported by $10,000 in matching funds by USF, will be pursued through four stages, including (Stage 1) the establishment of native plant seed gardens, (Stage 2) the expansion of community outreach at Charlotte Codo Prairie, (Stage 3) the harvesting seed from the seed gardens, purchasing seed to supplement harvested seed, and planting of the native seed in the alfalfa field (using current best practices for prairie restoration), and (Stage 4) the planning of controlled burns at the restored site. The ComEd Green Region grant will support efforts for Stages 1 and 2 of this multi-phase project. Lash sees the benefits of this project reaching beyond USF. “This project will not only benefit the University of St. Francis (USF) community but will engage the broader local community in prairie restoration. USF faculty and students will continue to use Codo Prairie for engagement in scientific research and education. Beyond USF, the Codo Prairie Committee is working on establishing approval processes for research by universities and other scientific groups beyond USF affiliates. We are also working on making Codo Prairie more accessible to the public through community partnerships and long-term plans for the property,” Lash said. Ultimately, Lash sees the restoration of native Illinois habitat in Will County as the ultimate goal and is grateful to the ComEd Green Region Grant program for helping USF to embark on that journey. “We are so thankful for the support from the ComEd Green Regions Grant. This award will allow us to build on our educational efforts at the Charlotte Codo Prairie and will support the next stage of prairie restoration at this USF property. Increasing prairieland will support local pollinators, enrich local biodiversity, improve soil health, and assist in climate resiliency research. We are so excited to contribute to restoring native Illinois habitat in Will County,” Lash said. Fortune Names USF’s Online Master of Science in Nursing Program the Best in Illinois

Joliet, Ill. – As the University of St. Francis (USF) prepares to open the fall 2022 semester later this month, it will do so with the top-ranked online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program in Illinois according to Fortune’s inaugural Best Online Master’s in Nursing (MSN) Programs in 2022. In fact, USF’s MSN program (#29 overall) was one of only two Illinois programs included in Fortune’s 2022 rankings. “Graduates from USF’s program incorporate their education and research into a practice that is reflective of the dynamic needs of a diverse population. Through that advanced role, they are instrumental in ensuring health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration in their community of practice. Through scientific inquiry and collaborative relationships, the advanced practice nurse continually augments and refines the science of nursing,” said USF Leach College of Nursing dean, Yeijin Yeom, Ph.D., RN, CNE. “Online master’s degree programs in nursing provide nurses a path into an APRN career by enabling them to remotely earn their degree from top-ranked programs. These online programs offer more flexibility than an in-person master’s degree program in nursing, but still deliver the guidance and curriculum required for licensure. The online path is a critical part of meeting the stark demand for advanced practice registered nurses in the coming years, which is why Fortune is launching its inaugural ranking of online master’s in nursing (MSN) programs,” said Meghan Malas of Fortune Education. Fortune’s online MSN program rankings were based on three criteria: Selectivity Score (55% comprised of the average undergraduate GPA of incoming students, and a weighted program acceptance rate), Success Score (40% comprised of one-year retention and graduation rates), and Demand Score (5% comprised of the program’s most recent graduating class). Other Recent Top Accolades for USF USF’s MSN program earning top accolades in Illinois by Fortune adds to a growing list of top State honors by Joliet’s university. In the past 12 months, USF also earned recognition for having the best online MBA program in Illinois by U.S. News & World Report, as well as the safest college campus in Illinois according to WalletHub. Mason Earns Leadership Award from Illinois CPA Society

Kenneth Mason
Joliet, Ill. – In less than ten years since earning two degrees from the University of St. Francis (USF), Kenneth (Kenny) Mason, CPA, MBA, has already achieved a tremendous amount of success. His young career has already included roles at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP, Legacy Professionals LLP, First Community Financial Bank, and the University of St. Francis, and currently finds him as the CEO of Equibis, an accounting and business advisory services firm he established in Chicago. This summer, Mason’s career path to date was recognized as Mason was presented with the Illinois CPA Society 2022 Young Professionals Leadership Award, which recognizes a young professional under age 35 who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in their career, in public or community service, and through involvement in professional organizations. Mason received the award at the Illinois CPA Society’s Leadership Recognition and Awards Dinner on June 9, 2022, in Chicago, where he formally joined a list of the field’s most talented and inspiring young professionals. The current owner of two businesses, Mason is already looking to continue his impressive career path with a very specific vision for his future. “In the next 5 years, I plan to start my third business. In the next 10 years, I plan to begin developing entrepreneurial and business-focused education programs for teens and helping them get their ideas off the ground,” Mason said. While Mason envisions the best in his career is yet to come, he believes it will continue to be built upon a solid professional foundation he credits USF for helping him to create. “USF was everything in terms of setting my initial career trajectory. Starting my journey in public accounting, I actually received my first job offer through a USF buddy of mine, Keith Schomig. We were classmates, then friends, and eventually co-workers. I was highly encouraged to enter public accounting from the jump because it would allow me to experience many different businesses,” Mason said. Mason added that his involvement outside of the classroom at USF also provided him with tools for success. “Being involved with different organizations and extra-curriculars at USF helped my entrepreneurial spirit and volunteerism. From being a member of Brother 2 Brother, the football team, the Augustus Tolton Honor Society, and many others, I had to learn quickly how to manage many different things and moving parts. Fast forward to today as an entrepreneur the mindset I have is very similar, more mature and evolved, but similar nonetheless,” Mason said. Mason currently serves on the ICPAS and CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois’ Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparedness Program’s Selection Task Force, where he mentors program scholars to help them achieve success. His advice to these scholars and other college-aged students is to maintain a clear vision of what it is they aspire to achieve. “Don’t lose your vision. The world will tell you to lose that vision/desire in order to simply play it safe. Although there is wisdom in that, there’s also fear residing in that way of thinking. I’m a testament to doing both. I began a career in one of the most reliable/secure career paths, and I simultaneously developed my ideas until the point where I can dedicate my daily life to it. Whatever you do, don’t give up if it’s on your heart, especially not out of fear,” Mason said.
