Dr. Catherine Nelson is a Professor in the College of Education and has been at the University of St. Francis since 2003. She earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Aurora University in 2007, a master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Governors State University in 1997, and a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary/middle school education from the University of Illinois in 1992. Prior to teaching at USF, Dr. Nelson was a cooperating teacher for field experience students from the College of Education. She taught middle school math and science, as well as 5th grade.
Dr. Nelson teaches a variety of courses across the education programs at USF, including Instructional Planning and Assessment, Methods of Teaching Elementary School Mathematics, and Evidence of Teaching Proficiency at both the Undergraduate and Graduate Levels. In addition, she teaches Methods of Educational Research at the Graduate level. Dr. Nelson is also a supervisor for teacher candidates in elementary education, middle school math education, and secondary math education, as well as an advisor for elementary education teacher candidates. Her academic interests include developing student number sense, effective assessment techniques, and how to teach students critical thinking skills. Her personal interests include hiking, reading, traveling, and cooking.
