The University of St. Francis formally inaugurated Dr. Ryan C. Hendrickson as the institution’s 10th president during an on-campus ceremony on October 3, 2025. The academic procession and inauguration activities gathered civic and religious leaders, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the university to celebrate this historic occasion. The inauguration featured an academic procession, formal greetings from representatives of the university and community, and Dr. Hendrickson’s inaugural address.
“The inauguration of a president is both a celebration of leadership and a reaffirmation of the university’s mission,” said Lisa Sampalis, VP for University Advancement. “Dr. Hendrickson embodies the Franciscan values that guide the University of St. Francis and brings a strong vision for advancing academic excellence, fostering community partnerships, and preparing our students to serve the world with competence and compassion.”
Honorable Terrence D’Arcy, Mayor of Joliet, called the University a “beacon of light of Franciscan values” in his greetings during the ceremony. Sr. Jeanne Bessette, OSF, president of USF’s founding congregation, the Third Order of Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, addressed Hendrickson during the ceremony saying, “the Joliet Franciscans stand with you as together, we pledge our holiness and actions.” Shane Green, Vice Chair for the University of St. Francis Board of Trustees, also spoke about Hendrickson, saying, “We have chosen a leader who embodies vision, scholarship, and leadership.”
After the Investiture of the President, Hendrickson gave his inaugural address, referring to the University of St. Francis as “deeply impactful.” He spoke about the four core Franciscan values leading USF’s mission: respect, service, integrity, and compassion.
“We continue to integrate our four core values into our campus ethic,” he said. “I look forward to working with all of you to chart the course while maintaining our four Franciscan values.”
In reference to USF’s relation with the community, Hendrickson said, “Our students have and continue to form and shape our immediate surrounding community.”
Hendrickson began his tenure as president on June 1 this year following a distinguished career at Eastern Illinois University. Since assuming office, he has prioritized expanding the university’s profile and strengthening its connection to the surrounding communities.
Founded in 1920 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, the University of St. Francis is rooted in Catholic, Franciscan traditions. The inauguration of its 10th president serves as a moment of renewal and commitment to the institution’s enduring mission of higher education in service to others.
